Soviet heavy tanks IS (abbreviation IS means Iosif Stalin) were developed in 1943 as a successor to the outdated KV-series. The IS-1, armed with 85 mm gun was introduced into service in September 1943, but soon it became obvious that this weapon wasn't powerful enough to fight the modern German tanks. In the end of 1943 a new modification with a 122 mm gun and the designation IS-2 was developed. This new was tank introduced into service in the beginning of 1944, and took part in battles of the late World War II. The IS-2 was rightfully considered as the strongest heavy tank of its day.
