Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (506th PIR) was an airborne infantry unit in the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division during World War II. Made famous by Stephen Ambrose's 1992 book and the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, it is one of the most celebrated rifle companies in American military history.

"E" (Easy) Company: In WWII military phonetic alphabet, "E" stood for "Easy." Easy Company was the 5th company of the 506th PIR (part of 2nd Battalion).

506th PIR: 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment—an elite experimental unit formed in 1942 at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, trained to drop behind enemy lines via parachute.

 

Major Combat Engagements

  • D-Day (June 6, 1944 - Operation Overlord): Parachuted into Normandy behind Utah Beach. Easy Company famously neutralized a German artillery battery at Brécourt Manor, an assault tactics case study still taught at West Point today.
  • Operation Market Garden (September 1944): Parachuted into the Netherlands to capture strategic bridges around Eindhoven and Nijmegen.
  • Battle of the Bulge (December 1944 – January 1945): Defended the critical crossroads town of Bastogne, Belgium, holding off surrounding German forces in freezing conditions without adequate winter clothing, food, or ammunition.
  • Advance into Germany & Austria (1945): Captured Hitler’s mountain retreat, the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), in Berchtesgaden before serving occupation duty in Austria until demobilization.
